⚔️ THEME: KUMITACHI / SUNDAY 28 MARCH 2021

Join us for this Sunday Workshop as we explore in solo form the 5 Kumitachi – as Morihiro Saito Sensei learned, developed, and transmitted from Morihei Ueshiba, during his 23 year period of study. The idea is not only to explore each forms technical details as a solo kata, but to understand the logic, purpose, and intention behind each of the movements. In order to fully access this level, the fundamental practices of the suburi, and a grasp of the awase level of training is essential. During the morning we will build up from the simple basics to taking the forms towards flexible and flowing methods – and into an exploration of henka waza (variations) where appropriate. It is important as we enter this level not to become lost in the idea of only practising sword forms, the Aiki-ken is a training aid to develop the body, not to learn pratical kenjutsu applications. Saito Sensei said we need to constantly have in mind Taijutsu techniques as we practice the Kumitachi.

The nature of solo practice also allows us to practice our power generation skills, which is normally inhibited for reasons of safety during partner practice. The power of solo training is in the ability to study deeper the principles which make the access to this demanding level of training possible – challenging constantly our ability to be relaxed, grounded, and balanced in our movements. The purpose of the training is to move towards a more fuctional effectiveness, and ease of being, on and off the mat.
