4 WEEK AIKIDO ONLINE BASICS CLASSES

Join us for our 4 Week AIKIDO ONLINE BASICS CLASSES.

These beginners’ friendly classes are open to everyone, all abilities welcome.

This series of classes will focus on the KATA practices of the Jo (Japanese Wooden Staff). ‘Kata’ are linked sequential patterns of various lengths that help train not only a variety of movements, but are also excellent methods to train the energetic/ mental aspects of concentration and attention that are central to martial arts practice.

We will specifically focus on the 31 Jo Kata, a practice taught by Morihei Ueshiba (the founder of Aikido) and codified by Saito Sensei. We will explore the kata in detail in a step-by-step method, and build up to the form in its entirety.

🔥 Class Schedule:

Each class will be a 60 minute exploration of the purpose of the weapon in relation to Aikido practice, the etiquette surrounding it, and the principles of integrating the weapon, body and mind.

There will be two time slots available to suit international time zones:

Thursday – 5 to 26 May – 12:00 to 13:00 CEST

OR

Friday – 6 to 27 May – 19:00 to 20:00 CEST

You can convert CEST to your time zone using following page:

🔥 Course Cost:

For the full 4 Weeks of training the cost is 20 Euros.

Payment can be made using Paypal.

🔥 Here’s what you need to know about the class:

You will need a pole, about 120-130 cm long, like a broom handle. If you already have a Jo (Japanese wooden staff), that’s perfect.

Ideally, you will have a 2m x 2m space to train in, with a high ceiling.

The class will take place on 𝗭𝗼𝗼𝗺 and will be recorded LIVE and available for you to review in your own time.

🔥 What are the advantages of weapon training?

  • Body use. Posture and movement. In Aikido we strive to develop a body fully connected to the ground, connected intrinsically in all its parts and organised from the center, both at rest and in movement. The first level of weapon training is solo training and at this level one can train slowly and with attention on the above dynamics without the distraction of an attacking partner.
  • Power. The development of power in Aikido (kokyu) is an extension of the above dynamics of body use and movement in that power is accessed from the ground, directed through the tissues of the body from the center and expressed and transferred through the periphery at the point of contact to our partner. The dynamic in the development of power: ground-centre-periphery is exactly the dynamic we search out with weapon training where it is much more accessible than in empty handed practice.
  • It’s beautiful! Without a doubt Aikido is one of the most aesthetically satisfying martial arts to witness and practice. The weapon forms as left by O Sensei (the Founder of Aikido) and developed further by Morihiro Saito Sensei are beautiful to practice in their own right.
