Instructors for the Seminar:

Michael Ormerod, 3rd Dan AIKIKAI

Michael Ormerod began his training in Aikido at the age of 15 in the UK. He has trained extensively throughout Europe and under taken an intensive training period in Japan under the guidance of Hiroki Nemoto Sensei (7th Dan) and training in the Founder’s Dojo and Hombu Dojo. In 2016 he began a full time apprenticeship under his teacher Lewis Bernaldo de Quiros (6th Dan), training and teaching in the Takemusu Aikido Motril Dojo and attending international seminars as assistant. In 2019 Michael received the rank of Sandan (3rd Dan) from the Aikikai in Japan, Tokyo. Early 2020 saw the creation of the Takemusu Aikido Online Dojo, as a response to the Covid Pandemic – giving people the opportunity to continue their daily practice and the comfort of knowing that Aikido is just a click away under any circumstances.

Adrian Punt, 2nd Dan AIKIKAI

Adrian (2nd Dan Aikikai) is an instructor at West Cumbria Aikido.

Adrian started aikido in 1994 under the direction of Geoff Flather Sensei of Banyu Hatten Aikido (BHA) and  was awarded his shodan in January 1999. Later that year he moved to West Cumbria and established the first aikido club in St Bees where he taught for a number of years.

Adrian has been a member of Traditional Aikido Europe (TAE)  since October 2018. He trains extensively with the TAE clubs in Lancaster and Wolverhampton (takemusu style), with which he has very close ties. He attends numerous TAE weekend seminars and summer schools with Lewis Bernaldo de Quirós, 6th Dan Aikikai (Lewis trained full-time under the late Morihiro Saito Sensei from 1986 until 1993 in the Iwama Dojo in Japan). He also attends daily asageiko (morning training) with Michael via the Takemusu Aikido Online Dojo. In July 2020, at summer camp in Swizerland, Adrian successfully tested under Lewis for his Aikikai shodan and then in Motril in Spain for his nidan in October 2021.

ABOUT CHET VALLEY AIKIDO:

Chet Valley Aikido was the brainchild of Sarina Abdul- Rani (4th kyu).

Sarina’s first Aikido class was in Darwin, Australia, about 20+ years ago. After many starts/stops and changes in life situation, she started training again about 16 years ago in Norwich, UK, with the late Sensei John Tidder and Sensei Alan Prescott. She paused after a couple of years when she realised that life was about to change with a baby on the way. Just a few weeks before the UK went into a full lockdown in early 2019, Sarina managed to train for about 6 weeks with Sensei Frank Burlingham and Sensei Vince Price (Broadland Aikido Club).

After many weeks with the online classes organised by TAE and subsequently being mad enough to do most of Michael’s Online daily classes through the pandemic (which was more interesting that home schooling her children!), Sarina was invited by Brendon Buchanan to join his Kou Ki Do Kan Club. Fast forward to summer 2021, the idea of a TAE-style club based in Sarina’s Norfolk patch was born and after two successful online seminars in her local village halls with Michael and Adrian teaching, Chet Valley Aikido became a reality.

Footnote: the baby that paused Sarina’s training in 2007 is now a non-grumpy 14 year old teenager Isabella, who is enjoying her regular private Aikido online classes with Michael.

FUNDRAISING:

We have developed a good working relationship with Claxton Village Hall, Claxton, Norfolk, where we have our regular Monday classes from 9am-11am. Our 9 mats were kindly loaned to us for the last 4 months from another community centre, Brian Clark Room, Chedgrave, Norwich. As a club we had managed to secure £300 funding from Go For It (local council) specifically to purchase mats.

In mid-January, through a series of very fortunate events, we were incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to purchase 100 second hand mats at £1,200 from Sampson Sampson, 8th Dan, and Bob Bushness, 6th Dan, of the Sobell Judo Club in London.

We needed £900 more to commit to the mats and here Chet Valley Aikido would like to thank Nick Larkin, Roy Murray and Adrian (on behalf of West Cumbria) for putting up and lending Chet Valley Aikido the £900 collectively that meant that we were able to purchase these mats without delay.

We hope this fundraising seminar will help to cover some of the cost for the mats, but also for everyone to have an enjoyable time as this will be the first time that Michael will be instructing with the Takemusu Aikido Online Dojo and Chet Valley Aikido .

SEMINAR THEME:

SHOSHIN (Beginner’s Mind)

“It is understood that Budo begins with Shoshin and ends with Shoshin.”

T.K. Chiba Shihan

Shoshin (初心) is a concept in Zen Buddhism meaning “beginner’s mind”. The kanji was chosen by Sarina to represent Chet Valley Aikido, hand drawn by fellow aikidoka Naoko Ueda. It refers to maintaining an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions when studying a subject, especially when studying at an advanced level, just as a beginner in that subject would. To quote zen master Shunryo Suzuki, “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.” To approach our training every time as a unique experience, as if with fresh eyes, is a way to bring us back into an active learning mindset rather than one of passive performance.

Socrate’s statement that, “I Know That I Know Nothing”, is a reminder that any attempt to gain a deeper understanding is rooted in a primary experience of ‘not-knowing’. To hold this paradox in the mind as we train again and again familiar techniques, our practice can become one of constantly returning to the demands of the encounter at hand, and meet it fully for the first (and only) time.

The Seminar will explore the idea of Shoshin as we weave in and out of the Takemusu Aikido Bukiwaza and Taijutsu systems (both solo and partered), and explore the levels of Kihon to Ki no nagare.

…ruthlessly tear your practice down to the basics and understand what you are doing and why you are doing it. What are you really doing on the mat? What are you really trying to learn with all those endless falls and ikkyo’s? Don’t take anything for granted and don’t be fooled by grades or levels of attainment. Martial arts practice is a practice of consciousness. Of waking up to being present and responsive to the demands of the moment beyond the personal agenda of the person. To my mind then it can have meaning not only on the mat but beyond and not only as a martial art but as a way of life.

Lewis Bernaldo de Quiros, 6th Dan Aikikai – direct student of Morihiro Saito Sensei

FEBRUARY WORKSHOP

The next Online Workshop of 2022 will be exploring the theme of: ‘Freedom of Movement’.

“Move like a beam of light: fly like lightning, strike like thunder, whirl in circles around a stable center.”
— Morihei Ueshiba

The value of formal pattern training, as we practice in Suburi and Kata, is in the ability to go deeper and deeper into the function of the form and the demands of the movement in the domains of the biomechanical and feeling-sensations. Allowing us to delve into areas such as grounding, centering, power-generation, as we slowly make fundamental changes to the organisation of our bodies. However, the limits of the form can also begin to lock us into set repetitive patterns, and the form itself risks becoming a restriction.

In order to progress in our training we must constantly approach the form as if we are creating it anew each and every time, with the curious mindset of the explorer. We may come to the realisation that all form arises from formlessness, someone at some point codified the practice as a representation of a principle, and that the form serves as an example and can be seen as a possibility rather than a limitation. We can approach genuine freedom of movement, the only restriction being the limits of our own understanding and creativity!

In the classic text The Demon’s Sermon by Chozan Shissai, a swordsman journeys up to Mount Kurama, and eavesdrops on a series of dialogues of the Tengu (mythical Japanese creatures said to hold the secrets of Budo). One of the dialogues between the master and student concerns the principles of movement and stillness central to martial arts that is worth quoting in full:

‘One asked: ‘What does it mean “to be motionless in motion and in stillness not still”?

He answered: ‘Man is a creature of movement. It is impossible for him not to move. Yet a man who possesses these characteristics may, to be sure, be very busy with his day-to-day activities. In spite of this, he does not allow his Heart to be set in motion by things; his Heart is balanced and still, free from desires and not held captive by his self. In terms of swordsmanship this means: If a man is confronted by a superior enemy force, even though he may dispense his cuts to the right and to the left, his spirit will remain completely still in respect to life and death and his thoughts unmoved by the superior enemy’s power. This is called “motionless in motion”.

“Essence and function have one source. Hence, that is what is meant to be conveyed by the phrase “motionless in motion and in stillness not still “. In terms of swordsmanship this means: A person confronts the enemy with his sword or spear in hand. If in this act he is impartial, without hate or fear, without thinking ” should I do this or rather that? ” and from this frame of mind adjusts to the approaching opponent, then that person’s reactions will be unhindered and free…’
— Excerpt from ‘The Tengu-geijutsu-ron of Chozan Shissai’ – REINHARD KAMMER
Read in full here: https://terebess.hu/zen/teng.pdf

The workshop will explore these ideas and will weave in and out of the Takemusu Aikido Bukiwaza and Taijutsu systems, and explore the levels of Kihon to Ki no nagare, with Kata and Jiyuwaza practices.

ONLINE WORKSHOP / JANUARY 2022

The first Online Workshop of 2022 will be exploring the theme of: ‘Moving In Alignment’.

The definition of Align is:

  1. to place or become placed in a line
  2. to bring (components or parts) into proper or desirable coordination or relation.

The idea of there being a ‘proper’ alignment for the body to function effectively is of huge importance for Martial Arts (and Daily Life). The first definition may seem to suggest that it is as simple as following the age old adage to ‘sit up straight’, but in movement and activity the reality is more nuanced and complex, and we might be reminded of the idea that ‘nature doesn’t work in straight lines.’ The second definition of bringing parts into relational harmony is more along the lines of exploration in this workshop. Through simple exercises we will work not only the structural alignments of the body, but the interrelation and effect of our internal (and external) feeling-sensations.

Morihei Ueshiba is quoted as saying: ‘A good stance and posture reflect a proper state of mind.’ Making the connection between the physical and structural alignment of the body with the mental aspect, and refers to the idea of poise of both body and mind. Here alignment takes on a deeper meaning, that of aligning ourselves ‘to something’. That something could be an idea, a feeling, a principle, or that of aligning our whole being to the demands of the moment. The simple reminder from Ueshiba could be seen as condensing one of the important pieces from the Nei-yeh:

‘When your body is not aligned,
The inner power will not come.
When you are not tranquil within,
Your mind will not be well-ordered.
Align your body, assist the inner power,
Then it will gradually come on its own.’

– Excerpt from page 66 of Nei-yeh (Original Tao: Inward training and the foundations of Taoist mysticism) by Harold D. Roth

The weekend workshop will explore these ideas and will weave in and out of the Takemusu Aikido Bukiwaza and Taijutsu systems, and explore the levels of Kihon to Ki no nagare.

ONLINE WORKSHOP / 27 + 28 NOVEMBER 2021

‘Satisfaction lies in mindful repetition, the discovery of endless richness in subtle variations on familiar themes.’

George Leonard

Join us for the next Online Workshop ‘Vital Techniques’.

This workshop will explore the essence of Takemusu Aikido in developing an unlimited and appropriate response to the nature of the moment. We will work out from the basic forms and into subtle variations and applied forms.

‘The techniques of Aikido change constantly; every encounter is unique, and the appropriate response should emerge naturally. Today’s techniques will be different tomorrow. Do not get caught up with the form and appearance of a challenge. Aikido has no form – it is the study of the spirit.’

– Morihei Ueshiba

The training will weave in and out of the Takemusu Aikido Bukiwaza and Taijutsu systems, and explore the levels of Kihon to Ki no nagare.

SUNDAY WORKSHOP / 25 APRIL 2021

‘𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝘀𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱.’

– 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗯

Join us for this Sunday Workshop as we explore the First Teaching of Aikido.

IKKYO 一教

In this Workshop we will delve into the foundational Aikido exercise of Ikkyo, especially in the primary principles of Kokyu (whole-body power generation) and Riai (interconnected nature of weapons and empty-handed principles). Simple exercises of Ichi no Suburi and Tai no Henko will be unpacked as training tools to deepen our relationship to the ground, gravity and momentum, and sense of extension from our core to extremities. This will later be expanded into the more specific Ikkyo omote and ura waza. As in many of the foundational exercises, Ikkyo is essentially a teaching of connection.

ICHI-GO 一期

At the same time as training the physical we must also bring to consideration the mental and energetic aspects of our practice. The famous Zen phrase ‘ICHI-GO ICHI-E’ (One lifetime One meeting) is a reminder that each event is a unique occurrence, never to be repeated. The practice of Martial Arts is a way of bringing us back to our senses and into a more efficient interaction with our environment. Our ability to move towards a more connected, precise, functional form doesn’t come from endless repetition – but from bringing our whole being into alignment with the present moment – as it is.

Morihei Ueshiba said that the technique of Ikkyo required “a spirit surging effusively from the earth and thrusting forward in an endless drive.” (as quoted in the Traditional Aikido series.)

AIKIDO ONLINE Sunday Workshop – Theme: KUMITACHI – with Michael Ormerod

𝘊𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧

~ Morihei Ueshiba

⚔️ THEME: KUMITACHI / SUNDAY 28 MARCH 2021

Join us for this Sunday Workshop as we explore in solo form the 5 Kumitachi – as Morihiro Saito Sensei learned, developed, and transmitted from Morihei Ueshiba, during his 23 year period of study. The idea is not only to explore each forms technical details as a solo kata, but to understand the logic, purpose, and intention behind each of the movements. In order to fully access this level, the fundamental practices of the suburi, and a grasp of the awase level of training is essential. During the morning we will build up from the simple basics to taking the forms towards flexible and flowing methods – and into an exploration of henka waza (variations) where appropriate. It is important as we enter this level not to become lost in the idea of only practising sword forms, the Aiki-ken is a training aid to develop the body, not to learn pratical kenjutsu applications. Saito Sensei said we need to constantly have in mind Taijutsu techniques as we practice the Kumitachi.

The nature of solo practice also allows us to practice our power generation skills, which is normally inhibited for reasons of safety during partner practice. The power of solo training is in the ability to study deeper the principles which make the access to this demanding level of training possible – challenging constantly our ability to be relaxed, grounded, and balanced in our movements. The purpose of the training is to move towards a more fuctional effectiveness, and ease of being, on and off the mat.

LEARNING OUTSIDE THE LINES – AIKIDO ONLINE SUNDAY WORKSHOP

SUNDAY WORKSHOP / 28 FEBRUARY 2021

The highest form of research is essentially play. Einstein is quoted as saying, “The desire to arrive finally at logically connected concepts is the emotional basis of a vague play with basic ideas. This combinatory or associative play seems to be the essential feature in productive thought”

“Play is Education” by N. V. Scarfe

Join us for this Sunday Workshop as we explore a curious and playful approach to training. We will develop soft skills, intuitive body movement and a creative approach to problem solving. This has a dramatic affect on our ability to make new distinctions and connections within the system, and serve as an acid test for our current technical skill level. The aim is not to break or ‘go beyond’ forms, but to learn how to play within and without them…

The training will weave in and out of the Takemusu Aikido Bukiwaza and Taijutsu systems – bring a bokken, jo and tanto!

DAILY TRAINING EXPERIENCE

Our Daily Training Experience, guided by Michael Ormerod – Chief Instructor of the Takemusu Aikido Online Dojo, is an in-depth exploration of the art of Aikido. An opportunity to go deeply into a modern embodiment practice, rooted in the Japanese Martial Tradition. The training will be serious and demanding, but always carried out in playful and joyful manner, designed to engage and challenge the beginner and seasoned practitioner of all levels. The most important thing is to learn to listen to your own body and eventually become your own teacher!

The training weaves in and out of the Takemusu Bukiwaza and Taijutsu systems. The focus being on solo bodywork to help you gain a fuller understanding of the Principles that underline Aikido: Centering, Connecting, Blending, Harmonising, and essentially: Non-resistance.

Train with our existing members located all around the world, from your own home!

🔥 𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗗𝗨𝗟𝗘 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘

From next week we will be introducing a new class to our Daily Training Schedule!

🔨 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆…

𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘: 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟳.𝟬𝟬 – 𝟴.𝟬𝟬 𝗣𝗠 𝗖𝗘𝗧 / 𝟲.𝟬𝟬 – 𝟳.𝟬𝟬 𝗣𝗠 𝗚𝗠𝗧

The training will explore the idea how to approach forming a resilient (anti-fragile) body. We will look at an area of study that perhaps recently has not been emphasised: the area of conditioning, strengthening and stretching. The classes will also cover a range of 𝗨𝗞𝗘𝗠𝗜 + 𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗜 exercises and drills, a wide reaching and valuable area of exploration.

🔥 𝗚𝗼𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱: ”𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿”

𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 – 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵!

The benefit of having a extended period of solo training means that we can focus on developing our own ‘𝘼𝙄𝙆𝙄-𝘽𝙊𝘿𝙔’ (Hammer) and the ‘𝙐𝙆𝙀-𝘽𝙊𝘿𝙔’ (Anvil). We need to be fully prepared and primed for our eventual return to our beloved interactive practices. There is no better way than solo training as part of a group, with clear guidance and feedback. We are fortunate in the Takemusu Aikido System to have all the tools necessary to work out from our basics and into solo practice, we only need to know where to look. The philosophy of the Online Dojo is to to create a space where we can share our practice wherever, whatever the current circumstances:

⚒️ 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 / 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘦 / 𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘊𝘈𝘙𝘙𝘠 𝘖𝘕!

Current Dojo member this training is included in the monthly membership. If you are new to the Dojo or are currently on a pay-per-class membership: the cost is 𝟱 𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀.
