WHAT ARE YOU DOING? – Zen Stories #1

Ma Tsu stayed in Ch’uan Fa temple at Nan Yo where he had a hut to live in seclusion and practise meditation. He did not look at those calling on him. One day, Huai Jang came to see him but Ma Tsu paid no attention to the visitor. Seeing the unusual expression of Ma Tsu’s face, Huai Jang remembered the Sixth Patriarch’s prediction and tried his best to convert Ma Tsu (to the Mind Dharma).

Huai Jang then took a brick to the door of the hut and rubbed the brick, but Ma Tsu also paid no attention. After a long while, Ma Tsu asked:

‘What are you doing?’

Huai Jang replied:

‘I am rubbing a brick to make a mirror.’

Ma Tsu said:

‘How can you make a mirror by rubbing a brick?’

The master said:

‘If a mirror cannot be made by rubbing a brick, how can one become a Buddha by sitting in meditation?’

Ma Tsu then rose from his seat and asked the master:

‘What should one do then?’

The master said:

‘If a cart drawn by an ox does not move, is it correct to whip the ox or the cart?’

Correct Training Method…

“If the training method is wrong, even years of training will fail to produce desirable results in any respectable martial art. I therefore urge you to take due note of this point and adopt a correct training method.

A correct training method starts with learning the basic movements, which are always practiced at each training session, and obtaining a prior knowledge of what these movements mean. Every time you practice, it is important for you to try out repeatedly what you have supposedly learned. Basic movements, which seem so simple and easy to everyone, are quite important in that they are usefully integrated into all Aikido techniques and serve to eliminate unnecessary movements and unnatural conflicts as a matter of course. Consequently, basic movements should be practiced at each training session and should under no circumstances be omitted. Such movements include โ€œBody Turnsโ€ and โ€œTraining of Abdominal Breath Power.โ€

THE ART OF PEACE BEGINS WITH YOU…

…Work on yourself and your appointed task in the Art of Peace. Everyone has a spirit that can be refined, a body that can be trained in some manner, a suitable path to follow.”

“The Way of the Warrior has been misunderstood. It is not a means to kill and destroy others. Those who seek to compete and better one another are making a terrible mistake. To smash, injure, or destroy is the worst thing a human being can do. The real Way of a Warrior is to prevent such slaughter โ€” it is the Art of Peace, the power of love.”
